Otras marcas: vivo, Huawei, Honor y Motorola
If an app keeps closing on its own on your Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO or OPPO, it's almost always down to the manufacturer's battery saver. You fix it by enabling the app's autostart and removing its battery restrictions. Here's where to find it on each brand.
Why apps close on Xiaomi and OPPO
On top of Android's own power saving, many brands add their own, far more aggressive version. It closes apps running in the background to make the battery last longer. For a messaging or remote-control app that needs to stay active at all times, that's a problem.
How to enable autostart on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO
- Open Settings, go to Apps, then Manage apps.
- Choose the app.
- Turn on Autostart.
- Go to Battery saver and choose No restrictions.
- On the recent apps screen, long-press the app and lock it with the padlock.
How to do it on OPPO, realme and OnePlus
- Open Settings and go to Apps.
- Choose the app and go to Battery usage.
- Turn on Allow background activity.
- Turn on Allow auto launch if it appears.
How to do it on Samsung
- Open Settings, Battery and Background usage limits.
- Go to Never sleeping apps and add the app.
- Check that the app isn't listed under “Deep sleeping apps”.
The step people forget: Android's battery optimisation
Separately from the manufacturer's settings, Android has its own optimisation. On the app's info page, go to Battery and choose Unrestricted or Don't optimise. Well-made apps ask you to do this the first time you open them.
How to check it no longer closes
Leave the phone untouched for a few hours with the screen off, then see whether the app is still running. If it has stopped, go through the steps again: sometimes a system update switches the restrictions back on.
If any permission also appears greyed out, follow the guide to allow restricted settings on Android. And to keep an eye on the battery of several phones, see what temperature and battery levels are normal.
Other brands: vivo, Huawei, Honor and Motorola
Almost every brand has something similar under a different name. Search Settings for these terms:
- vivo and iQOO: “Autostart” or “Background management”.
- Huawei and Honor: “App launch”, then turn off automatic management for the app.
- Motorola and Google Pixel: setting the app's battery to “Unrestricted” is usually enough.
Why it happens again after an update
Some system updates reset battery settings. If an app that was working fine starts closing after an update, run through the steps in this guide again: that's almost always the cause.
How to tell whether the problem is the app or the system
- If it always closes shortly after the screen turns off, it's the battery saver.
- If it closes with the screen on while you're using it, it's a bug in the app.
- If it only happens on one particular brand, it's almost certainly the system.
Frequently asked questions
Where is autostart on Xiaomi?
In Settings, Apps, Manage apps, the app, Autostart.
Why does WhatsApp or another app keep closing on my Xiaomi?
Because of the system's battery saver. Enable autostart and set the app's battery saver to “No restrictions”.
Does turning off battery saving use a lot more power?
For one or two apps, the difference is small. Only do it for the apps you need running at all times.
